Libya’s 500 MW Sadada Solar Project to Advance in 2025

Libya’s 500 MW Sadada Solar Project to Advance in 2025

Libya’s Sadada solar project is expected to advance in 2025, with preparations underway. Developed by energy major TotalEnergies in partnership with the General Electricity Company of Libya and the Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAOL), the project will have a capacity of 500 MW.

“We have already finalized the studies, including the technical and visibility studies. Hopefully this project will start soon. We are currently finalizing some paperwork and [we expect] everything to be finalized by the end of 2025, at least,” Dr. Al Ansari stated.

The project falls part of a broader renewable energy development strategy in Libya, aimed at diversifying the energy mix through the deployment of large-scale renewable energy projects. According to Dr. Al Ansari, the strategy “is from 2023 to 2035, and we are seeking to have 20% of renewable energy in the energy mix. This could open big doors for investment and we are inviting local and international investors to work with us to realize this strategy.”

Through platforms such as LEES, global investors and project developers have access to Libya’s energy investment opportunities. Dr. Al Ansari believes that “the summit gives us and Libyan entities a real opportunity to showcase to the world and announce projects, showing our opportunities. Libya is a big market and a lot of opportunity is here. The environment is there, the land is there, the solar and renewable potential is here. There is good geographical position with Italy and Malta and opportunity to export clean energy to both.”
