Libya's Oilfield Modernization Creates Demand for Data Infrastructure

Libya's Oilfield Modernization Creates Demand for Data Infrastructure

Libya's Arabian Gulf Oil Company and SLB are exploring expanded cooperation on digital oilfield technologies as the country seeks to improve production efficiency and modernize its energy infrastructure. Discussions held on October 21 focused on applying advanced digital solutions to field operations, underscoring the growing role of data management and automation in Libya's upstream sector.

The discussions reflect a broader shift toward digitally connected oilfield operations, where reliable telecommunications networks, real-time data processing and automated monitoring are becoming increasingly important to production performance. These developments will be in focus at the Libya Energy & Economic Summit (LEES) 2027, taking place January 23–25 in Tripoli, where dedicated discussions will examine the infrastructure and investment needed to support Libya's digital energy transition.

Oilfield Connectivity Creates Foundation for Digital Operations

Reliable connectivity is a prerequisite for operators seeking to monitor equipment remotely, integrate production data and respond more quickly to changing field conditions. Libya is expanding the telecommunications infrastructure needed to support these applications across its oil and gas assets.

The country's Oil Fields Connectivity Project, rolled out by Aljeel Aljadeed Technology and Hatif Libya in December 2025, established telecommunications links across more than 200 sites, including over 80 oilfields and export ports. With network speeds of 100 Gbps, expandable to 400 Gbps, the infrastructure supports the transmission of operational data between field equipment, control systems and centralized monitoring facilities.

The network builds on NOC-backed telecommunications modernization under the Toward Smart Oil Cities framework, while satellite connectivity agreements involving Rawafed and Eutelsat OneWeb offer another means of reaching remote installations beyond terrestrial fiber coverage. These technologies aim to improve data availability across geographically dispersed assets, although connectivity alone does not guarantee that operators can integrate information across different systems.

Real-Time Data and AI Support Production Optimization

The commercial value of digital connectivity lies in how operators use the information it delivers. Integrating drilling, reservoir and equipment data allows companies to identify production constraints, improve maintenance planning and make operational decisions without relying solely on periodic field inspections.

In March 2026, NOC subsidiary Sirte Oil Company and SLB demonstrated this approach through Libya's first autonomous AI-driven geosteering operation at the Al-Khair field. The operation used real-time subsurface data to steer an 1,800-foot horizontal well section, doubling drilling penetration rates and unlocking production capacity of 1,060 barrels per day (bpd).

Beyond drilling, platforms such as SLB's Lumi illustrate how AI-enabled data management can support mature-field operations. By integrating subsurface and production information, such systems can help operators monitor equipment performance, identify developing problems and prioritize interventions before failures disrupt output.

Data Management Moves Into Focus at LEES 2027

As Libya targets more than 1.5 million bpd of crude production by mid-2027 and 2 million bpd by 2030, managing operational data across an expanding portfolio of assets will become increasingly important. This places data storage, processing capacity and system interoperability alongside network coverage as investment priorities.

LEES 2027 will address these requirements through its January 24 session, Libya's Digital Economy: Data Centers and Digital Infrastructure. Discussions will examine local data storage capacity, sovereign energy networks and high-availability infrastructure, while the event's Infrastructure and Integration forum will explore how digital systems can support broader energy development.
